Built a year earlier than the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453, the Rumelia Castle marks the determination of Sultan Mehmet II to capture the city. It stands right across the Anatolia Castle which was built by the young Sultan’s great-grandfather. The two fortresses where built for the same strategic purpose. Today, it offers a pleasant historical excursion outside the Old City.

It took the Ottomans five sieges over the reign of four sultans to conquer Constantinopolis. The road to the final victory was long and tedious. The picturesque castle by the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus was built as an initial step to pave the way.
